Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a sigh.

Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of morning hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I fell and dropped my lunch all over myself. To make matters worse, I was completely late for work.

A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
